Waterfront Park

For nearly a century, the County of San Diego along with civic leaders envisioned an open space park that capitalized on the prime waterfront location. While the iconic County Administration Building architecture is recognized worldwide, the beautiful building was surrounded by a sea of asphalt parking lots. In 2014, the long-realized dream of a park opened with spectacular success. Featuring oversized water amenities for children to splash in, jungle gyms, slides, open spaces for picnics and beautiful water-efficient, native plants, Waterfront Park ushers in a new era for San Diego’s skyline.

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation set its sights on a grand opening celebration where families, children and residents alike would attend and remember for a lifetime. With only four months for preparations, the County organized a robust team, including MJE Marketing, to develop event planning and public relations strategies to promote the monumental event.

Results:

  • Sponsorships, exhibits and concession stands all coordinated in record time, at no cost to taxpayers
  • Event attendance exceeded goals by 15,000 attendees
  • High levels of earned media coverage, valued at more than $100,000
